Chalet Uranium section Empty Photo bucket uranium pics

Post  deborah Sun Sep 26, 2010 6:56 pm

Hi everyone,

I created a photobucket account at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] so I could post pics as needed - I am still more than happy to send them via e-mail as well.

I have posted a variety of uranium pics there to address the need for pics until I can get them on the site somehow. You will see that they are shot in a variety of ways - all were shot in studio light and then under UV light. My photographer saved some in the traditional green glwo, some in shades of white and grey and some in both. We felt that showing the uranium glow as white and grey helped to see exactly where the uranium was found in the piece and how heavy its concentration. Sometimes - especially in the really heavy uranium pieces, you lose the shpae of the piece because of the glow. Which really is fun to see them that way but wanted to use both so in pieces that there were smaller amounts of uranium - you would be able to see exactly where it was. Check out the white shots of the Birks basket - if that was on your x-ray you would not be happy!

Chalet Uranium section Empty Uranium

Post  MarioP Sun Sep 26, 2010 7:55 pm

Just because a glass piece glows does not necessary mean it contains uranium. Uranium was one of the "ingredients" used in certain Chalet recipes in order to achieve certain colors...as was Cobalt, antimonium, and a variety of other chemicals/minerals and elements. Of course, they were mixed with sand, ashes, lime and potash.

Sometimes it was a combination of materials that made it glow.

"Vaseline" and "uranium" are two that are widely known and were used at that time.

Chalet Uranium section Empty Uranium Part Deux!

Sorry, to clarify the last sentence of my previous post....

"Vaseline" and "uranium" glass are synonymous....they are terms that were used during that time (60s and 70s).

Although uranium was used in many colored pieces, I have many clear crystal Chalet pieces that glow.

Chalet Uranium section Empty glow scale

Post  deborah Sun Sep 26, 2010 9:01 pm

Hi Mario,

So nice to have you post! Thanks - can you please tell us on a informal type of "glow scale" what glows what. I have always thought that uranium glows bright green, magnesium the orange /red and manganese a dull amberish green. What other "glow" under UV light can we expect to see in Chalet pieces. And I have a question too re is it better to use the wave lights on either side or do the UV light bulbs overhead work better?

My blue pieces are in Cornwall unfotunately so I can't retest them given all the uproar - I will take my lights down with me on the next trip and redo those to see if it is bright green or dull green as I feel my photographer's wish for "elegance" in his editing combined with the shoot being months ago is not the optimum situation here.

Thanks for your help!

I'm not sure if I can insert photos in this thread but I'll give it a try.
Is one of these pieces uranium and the other magnesium?

Chalet Uranium section Empty cwms gorgeous pics and pieces

Post  deborah Sun Sep 26, 2010 11:55 pm

Hi there - fabulous!

Let me take a shot - Mario, glasscollector, glassman, Darlene and FredT-see if I get it right: I think they both have uranium and the orange/ red fingertip splash also showing magnesium. Is the 4 prong piece blue?

How did you post pics - we have been posting offsite as that is what my web guy also believes. This is fantastic!

Beautiful pieces - I want them! On the splash page I have a 4 prong similar but not as rounded and I have an olive green vase like yours - I am drooling!

Thank you so much for the post - great "end of day" (ha - couldn't resist the pun)!

Chalet Uranium section Empty Replies about my pictures

Post  cwms Mon Sep 27, 2010 10:56 pm

The top 4-prong piece is a light blue with turquoise undertones, and a smidge of yellow green. It's not as clear a blue as the one Dar posted.
As for how I posted the pictures, Deborah, I have them in a private Photobucket album, but I just put the cursor on the thumbnail of the picture, then moved it down to the last option that appears, which is IMG Code, left click and 'copy' the link, then go to the post you want the picture in, right click and choose 'paste'. The link should appear in the post and show the picture.
I'm now planning on taking pictures of our entire collection.
Should we post them here on the site or is a Photobucket account preferable?

Hi cwms,

I posted an answer under a new topic and then realized you wouldn't be notified - sorry. Take a look at the new topic - won't repeat myself.

Looking forward to seeing your pictures!
