The Chalet Maple leaf Empty amazing leaf

Post  deborah Mon May 26, 2014 4:18 pm

Hi everyone,

When I first saw this piece - I did not know it was signed and told "Marcolet" that it wasn't the Expo Leaf and in fact, it wasn't even Chalet. Well, it may not be the 1967 piece but it sure is Chalet - just gorgeous!

One of the most frequent ids I get asked to make is of leaf shaped pieces. In the past, I have always said either Lorraine or Mosaic. Have to add the possibility of Chalet to that now - this is a piece that if not signed or stickered, we will never know for sure who the maker was as so similar and so few have any id. This is obviously the first and only Chalet piece of this style I have ever seen, have seen only 1 stickered Mosaic and never a stickered Lorraine but I know for sure they did them via a colleague who has access to their catalogues and production pictures. He was shocked to see the Mosaic piece as felt that only Lorraine had made this style.

Perhaps this was an early artist's sample for the 1967 design? A "one of a kind" that an artist made for themselves? Maybe the Mosaic and Lorraine pieces were very popular and Chalet was thinking of competing with a similar design? Given that Maestro Gatto worked at both Lorraine and Mosaic perhaps he did this? another fun Chalet mystery!

Here is the stickered Mosaic leaf. I have posted it before but needs to be here as well for comparison.

The Chalet Maple leaf Empty Re: The Chalet Maple leaf

Hi again,

Sure - good idea.

And just a add to what I wrote earlier. The main difference that I see between the Mosaic and the Chalet piece is ribs in the Mosiac and pulls in the Chalet. All the other pieces that I have ever seen have had the ribs. I think the colour combo really distracted me from noticing that this Chalet piece had a much different base. Obviously narrower as well but that can differ from piece to piece.

Here's the Expo leaf:
