Unsigned art glass pieces; can anyone tell if they are chalet or lorraine? Empty Unsigned art glass pieces; can anyone tell if they are chalet or lorraine?

Hello everyone.

I'm new to art glass and new to this forum. I was recently given 7 unsigned art glass pieces that look like either Lorraine or Chalet (or maybe even something else?). One piece (an amber gondola) is quite large, measuring 30 " long and weighing 10 1/2 lbs. A few others are small and 2 of them have bases different from the rest. I know very little about how to determine who manufactured these pieces and was wondering if anyone could help me to identify them. The link below contains images of the 7 pieces which include close up shots of their bases. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Smile

The first amber one is Mosiac. The bird, amber gondola and big orange one are Lorraine. The 2 vases are most likley some kind of American glass. I don't think they are as old but it's super hard to tell. They could be newer Murano but they are not Canadian. Nice collection.

Unsigned art glass pieces; can anyone tell if they are chalet or lorraine? Empty Welcome!

Hi there,

Love your first post - great pieces. Agree with Glassman. A note about your little amber vase. It is also Lorraine - catalogue number "Assortment 4000". Lorraine Glass Industries was a contemporary of Chalet's and they did minis as production pieces. Chalet did not. I have one just like it in amber and another in shades of orange. Such a cute piece! Love the shape. Lorraine did really nice vases.

Lorraine also did bird centerpieces but this one is by EDAG - another Montreal glasshouse and contemporary of Chalet. I just got a lime green one exactly like yours. Looking forward to its arrival - the EDAG lime green inspired me to do a laundry room in retro tile in lime green and orange. It's crazy and I love being able to put really flamboyant pieces out there. No one says ironing and dirty clothes have to be boring eh!

There is some info on the main site under "Similar yet Different" re Chalet and her rivals and 2 books that you find helpful if you want to learn more about these companies.

Pleased to have you join and good luck "hunting". Terrific start!

Hi Deborah,

Thank you so very much for the added information about my posted art glass pieces! You are absolutely AWESOME, and I am loving your site and forum! Very Happy

I have another question about the first amber dish (Mosiac? Mosaic?) posted in my pics. Do you know where I can get more information about the 'Mosiac' glass company? My web searches using the name 'Mosiac' doesn't give me any hits - keeps giving me info about traditional Mosaic glass.

Unsigned art glass pieces; can anyone tell if they are chalet or lorraine? Empty Damn Birds

Post  Glassman Mon Jan 14, 2013 5:19 pm

For the longest time I would have thought that first piece was Lorraine. Recently someone posted a stickered Mosiac piece like that. I forgot the mini vase I have one exactly the same on my flickr. It's Lorraine, and those damn birds I hate them lol, missed the base yes it's Edag. I have a blue Edag one on my flickr with the straight tail. I have that bird in red and lime purple and blue, red, orange, amber, green and amber you name it I've seen it lol.

Hi Glassman, thank you for your reply Smile

I'd love to see your birds, especially the lime one - the colour says it all - sounds beautiful! May I have your flickr link?

Unsigned art glass pieces; can anyone tell if they are chalet or lorraine? Empty Mosaic

Post  deborah Mon Jan 14, 2013 9:39 pm

Hi again,

Mosaic Artistic Glass was out of Cornwall for short time - operated for less than a year and only had 2 ovens. Check the main site - they and Rossi are included in the "Similar yet Different" section but again - the books have alot more info. That is - as much info as we have been able to uncover. Canadian art glass still shrouded in mystery. Very emotional still to those involved so info is hard to come by. Info in the books also about "Canada Art" - theories as that marking remains the biggest unproven to date.

I haven't included all the info on the sitethat is in the books as I can only post so much info before it makes the pages impossible to load - a limitation of a small site. I have reached the absolute maximum for example in "The Glossary" section - same with "Sold Inventory" as they both need another gallery added to handle either any more text or pics:(

Glad to hear you are enjoying the site and forum - nice to hear as a labout of love. Selfish too cos this way I get to see so much more glass without having to buy and then dust it!LOL

Glassman and Deborah, thanks again for helping me out with my questions! Glassman, I viewed your Flickr link and very much enjoyed your incredible collection of beautiful art glass! It appears that the art glass era was much bigger than I was aware of. 4 months ago I didn't even know that it existed Embarassed

Unsigned art glass pieces; can anyone tell if they are chalet or lorraine? Empty Beware!

Hey,

We will be interested in seeing where you are 4 months from now. Although I think it's already too late to warn you - be very careful. Collecting Chalet, Lorraine and EDAG is addictive! As Glassman and I both know (not to mention our partnersLOL) But that's why "Swiffers" were invented and it is amazing how much glass you can "smuggle" in!
