Chalet Pear marked with Cornwall Empty Chalet Pear marked with Cornwall

Post  Wildrose Tue Nov 02, 2010 11:45 pm

We have just joined this forum.
We have been Chalet collectors for several years.
One of the pieces that we acquired was a pear that is marked with both the Chalet etching, and CORNWALL on the bottom.
Can anyone tell us under what circumstances an item was marked Cornwall?

Thanks for your help!

Chalet Pear marked with Cornwall Empty CORNWALL marking explainned by Tony Tedesco

Post  deborah Thu Nov 04, 2010 11:20 am

Hi Wildrose

Went right to the source - just got off the phone with Tony Tedesco. He said that marking was done throughout the years to bring focus to Cornwall being the home of Chalet. However, the machine that did the etching was a major pain and most often than not didn't work so they rarely used it - that is why this mark is so scarce. It was not just done on pieces that stayed for sale in the factory showroom nor was it saved for "special" pieces. I have seen it only 4 times - all the times were on small ashtrays - with one being a mismark - only the CORNWALL got put on so that sure bears out what Tony said about the machine being a pain to use!

That piece is actually for sale and on display at the exhibit. I kept 2 of the ashtrays as a matched set and the other was on display at the exhibit as well but has been purchased. I think it is neat that your CORNWALL marking is on one of the gorgeous pears!

Mario P. and Tony will have to start charging us expert "consulting" fees!LOL

Hi Wildrose,

Your pictures are amazing - exquisite pieces. I want all of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Especially the apple - I have a pear but it has no mate and is very lonesome! So gorgeous - well done!

Chalet Pear marked with Cornwall Empty Thanks!

Post  Wildrose57 Sun Nov 07, 2010 4:14 pm

Glad I was able to figure out the process of pictures. They speak so much louder than words!

We do have a second pear, marked Chalet only (it was our first pear), then purchased the apple, and then the second pear with the Cornwall etching. Sorry, we don't have another apple to sell to you Deborah....

The first pear and apple set we saw was on ebay, and they were in amethyst. Both were damaged on the leaf, but they were gorgeous just the same. We were fairly new to Chalet collecting at the time, and didn't want damaged goods, so passed them by. We have never seen another amethyst pear/apple, and very few of the gold variety.

Chalet Pear marked with Cornwall Empty damaged apple and things you pass by

Post  deborah Sun Nov 07, 2010 4:18 pm

Hey,

I stupidly passed by an amethyst basket with a Simpsons hang tag when I totally was new to e-bay and this summer misssed an orange pear and apple set by dithering! I tried just in the last month to get an apple, it was damaged, but the seller wouldn't ship to Canada. Hopefully, he will relist as my parents are in Florida and it had a sticker from a Cornwall jewellers just around the corner from the gallery and I would love to take it in to show Mr. Pommier!

Chalet Pear marked with Cornwall Empty Yes, things passed by

Post  Wildrose57 Sun Nov 07, 2010 7:24 pm

This is a sad tale, but also a happy one...

We moved into our new place, and the accent colour we were decorating with was red. We had just begun admiring and collecting Chalet, but didn't know much about it, and the antique stores that carried it knew even less. So, in September of 2005, we took a vacation to BC, and started shopping - a piece in this town, 2 pieces in another town - I think we ended up with about 5 pieces total from that trip (Chalet), all very reasonably priced. One of the places we stopped at was Ft. Langley BC, and there we saw the most beautiful swirled red Chalet bowl, etched. Gorgeous!!! Would be perfect on the coffee table. But the price tag was $125.

This is where the story gets sad. Because we knew nothing, NOTHING about Chalet, we thought that it was too expensive, and that we would see others that would be more reasonable, so we took a picture of it for reference, and passed it by.

Five years and many, many antique shows and shopping trips later, we now have about 80 other pieces of Chalet, but we have NEVER seen another red bowl. We did find an orange one, and purchased it, but orange does not "go" on the coffee table when the accent colour of the room is red. The orange bowl is about 14 inches across and almost 5 inches tall. We did call the antique dealer the next year, after realizing that we should have purchased the bowl, (seems the colour red is not as common as a lot of the other colours), but he said a man had come into the shop and bought it for his wife.

Here is a picture of the red bowl we passed by, and the orange bowl we have.
