New member needs help in identifying glass Empty New member needs help in identifying glass

I am a new member to this forum. I am very excited to see all the pictures and read all the comments. I have learned so far that there are a lot of things to learn about glass. My grandmother always had this heavy glass "candy dish" sitting on her coffee table filled with butterscotch candies. It was my absolute favorite thing in my grandmother's house. A few years ago she gave me that "candy dish" and now it sits on my coffee table. My husband who is an oil and gas collector was in an antique shop and bought a few pieces of glass for me. I guess he thought that if he got me started he wouldn't feel so guilty about indulging in his own hobby. I started to research Chalet glass and from that discovered Lorraine glass. I was amazed at the breathtaking beauty of it all. I have since acquired a few more pieces. I am posting pictures of some of the unmarked ones that I have and would appreciate any information you may have. The blue one is my grandmother's "candy dish". I have recently ordered the Shapes and Colours book and look forward to reading it.

Nice collection,i like the candy dishes and ash trays too.I'm not 100 percent sure on the first amber one but the others are all Lorraine. The first amber one is probably Lorraine too.The tri colour one is very cool i have a picture of one almost identical on my flickr page.If you put that one and the blue one under a black light they will glow. The amber ones might as well.Ive always liked that pin wheel shaped ones, very cool.

New member needs help in identifying glass Empty my vote re first amber

Post  deborah Mon Jun 11, 2012 10:16 pm

Hey guys,

Agree with Glassman re the Lorraine except my opinion re the first amber piece is that it is Chalet. Great pieces - have always loved the red/blue/amber Lorraine pieces. Lorraine and EDAG colour combos much more common and adventurous than Chalet.

I think your husband is a keeper - but does he dust the pieces that he gets for you? That would make him just about perfect!

New member needs help in identifying glass Empty Thank

Post  glassisclass Mon Jun 11, 2012 11:47 pm

Thank you Glassman and Deborah. I look forward to the day that I can look at a piece and know what glass company created it (assuming that day ever comes). We are empty nesters now so I plan on spending more time on my new hobby. No Deborah, my husband does not dust the pieces he has bought for me, but neither does he complain when I buy a new piece. Not only does he have an oil and gas obession, he also collects Coca-Cola memorabilia and his collection is quite extensive so I have some catching up to do. I have been lucky and have found some pieces at our local church rummage sale and the flea market. I look forward to the hunt!!
Thank you again for your expertise.

So Glassman, I had to run out and buy a black light and yes they do glow. I loved it!! I have another blue piece that is a signed Chalet and the glow from that one was amazing. Impressed the heck out of my husband too. Thanks

I'm glad you like that, don't they look awesome? All blue ones glow the darker the better. You should look for the really dark amber ones they turn orange.Well most of the time. Red and lime green never glow. Those orange ones that glow green and red are really cool too.
