Unusual signed pieces

I have uploaded a few pictures to Flickr, with the exception of the first picture, all the pieces are signed. This is my first time using Flickr so let me know if the photos can be accessed!

Any ideas on the first one? Its quite heavy, but the base is not very typical Chalet style.

I added the polar bears because I read in the forum that clear non-Riekes animals/polar bears are rare and some members have never seen one signed.

Also, if anyone has any information on the "Snail/Shell" piece, I would greatly appreciate it. It's so odd looking!

Hi there,

You may be jealous of my paperweights but I am turning green over your candleholders - they are gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have only ever been able to get a really clunky mismatched ugly teal coloured pair and a beautiful pair of cranberry and crystal Riekes pair which are again different from the others. But neither in my colours and the teal pair "Not good glass" as the artists would say. Yours are so elegant and look totally different than the ones I have seen - only picture I have of the teal twosome is the one here from the exhibit.

Your other pieces are just as stunning and unusual - beautiful.Re the first one - can you post some more pics so we can see from side and the base. Also what are the dimensions. At first glance sure wouldn't rule out Chalet. Colour certainly not an eliminator.

Looking forward to seeing more as looks like you have some amazing glass! The crystal polar bear that you love was also occasionally done in blue and silver. Had one photographed today. Will post when get back. The first one I ever saw was Maestro Panizzon's at the show. So cute - love the nose eh!

Can you post a picture of the base,of the first blue one.It looks more Chalet from the top.The cloud is very cool,i want it lol.Perhaps it was suposed to be like the picture i will attach.I've seen baskets that have bent or stretched tops on them.Anyway it's awesome.

Thanks everyone, I will post additional pictures of the blue piece soon (as well some more of the collection) along with measurements and weight.

Glassman - now that you mention it, I can definitely see some resemblances. I really love that olive Eaton's piece. Very unique looking! I love flawed pieces because they still end up looking really great.

Deborah - I have been eyeing those Riekes candle holders for a while - admiring the pink accents. Quite nice!

Hey guys,

I agree re the "seconds" - am including a section on them in the revised reference guide. I have a "spike and curl" that ended up all curls and no spike. I also have a whale that they forgot to put eye indents into (very strange looking - a blind animal) and there is Glassman's "basket". Supposedly there was often a special marking for glass they sold as seconds but I have never found it.

Glassman - I never made the connection re the "cloud" and the cigar bowl shape but you have defintely got something there!

Looking forward to seeing some more pictures of number one.

Just a follow-up question to this thread. How rare or not rare are Chalet candlestick holders? I have seen the two posted in this thread, both quite different in style, but haven't seen any others in collections or on ebay. Thoughts?

Candlesticks (like the Riekes Chalet ones here) are exceedingly, exceedingly rare - this is the only set I have ever seen. Candleholders (like chalet collectors) are exceedingly rare. I have seen only 2 others that were matched in size - I was able to get a teal "pair" for the exhibit but they are not perfectly matched in size and one had a pull that was broken but they were all I could find to show the style. You can see them flanking the swan figurine in this picture (which is also incredibly rare - over 3 lbs and signed).

Lorraine also made candleholders in several styles but I do not think EDAG did.

I'm in the same boat as Deborah. I've only seen a candleholder pair like mine once before in blue (I love blue too!), but I didn't get it because I was a newbie collector and didn't want to spend that much. I've never seen one in the shape that Deborah posted (the teal ones) and have seen the Riekes pair only twice - I have/am actually considering buying yours Deborah! I've curbed my buying though. Too much stuff!

Good condition PAIRS are really rare - and a lot more expensive.

Like I said - I have candleholder envy for yours. I missed the pair I saw cos I was a newbie e-bay bidder and couldn't get my bid in fast enough - didn't think about putting in my top bid and then others not being able to catch up. I still gnash my teeth about it. I saw another pair on-line but they were not for sale. Have never ever seen a set "in person".

The Riekes crystal and cranberry set are truly gorgeous - very elegant and timeless. And in impeccable shape - even the labels. I don't think they would ever have been used as just too pristine. Labels not even faded so they must have been tucked away. I would bet few survived in good shape - wonder what happened if a candle burned too low - maybe cracked or exploded?

I would love to get a look at a Riekes catalogue - bet we would see quite a few different versions. Probably some pure crystal. Also hazard guess that someday - maybe see a set with a N.C. Cameron label given the 2 distributors lines sometimes crossed.

Something to keep looking for! And psshaw re curbing - research, it's all in the interest of research!
